With car insurance from Farmers, you have some traditional options and some options that you will not find with other auto insurance companies. You will want to consider using Farmers car insurance, or insurance from another insurance company, to protect you from financial loss if you should have an automobile accident. Farmers Insurance Group offers seven types of insurance, auto, home, life, motorcycle, recreational vehicle and business insurance. Auto insurance and homeowners insurance are their two largest commodities.

State Specific Coverage

There are only two states that do not require that you carry mandatory auto insurance, these states are New Hampshire and Wisconsin. Even so, these two states require you carry auto insurance if you cannot provide proof of financial responsibility through a cash payment to the DMV of those states or with a bond equal to about $30k or more. Farmers Insurance Company does offer auto insurance in both of these states.

There are two different types of states when it comes to auto insurance, tort states and no-fault states. There are only thirteen states that fall under the no-fault system. These states are: Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Utah. The California Department of Insurance is currently debating whether to switch to a no-fault state due to the large amounts of lawsuits that are filed in California because of unresolved auto accidents.

Tort states are states that allow individuals to sue the at fault person in an accident for medical expenses and damages that are not covered by the at fault person’s insurance. Often times, however, it can take months or even years to resolve a dispute regarding payment in an auto accident, which is why most experts recommend purchasing uninsured/underinsured auto insurance coverage for your vehicle.

Farmers Auto Insurance Availability

Farmers auto insurance is available in 41 states and is not available in Alaska, Delaware, Washington DC, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, South Carolina and West Virginia. There are a number of reasons that Farmers may not sell in those states, they may not be able to get a license, those states may require that insurance companies offer rates lower than they are willing to offer based on the accident statistics of the state or they simply have not moved into those states at this time.

Every state that requires that you carry auto insurance on your vehicle requires that you carry a minimum amount of liability insurance. This is by no means a restriction on the amount of insurance that you are allowed to purchase, but an amount set by the Secretary of Insurance in each state to ensure that you have some coverage to cover the cost of an auto accident.

Most states require that you carry two types of bodily injury insurance and property damage insurance. The bodily injury insurance is for a single person in an accident and then for all persons in the accident. The property damage covers the damage made to the other vehicle in the accident (if you are at fault). You will typically see the minimum insurance requirements shown like this 15/30/10, which translates to single person bodily injury/multiple persons bodily injury/property damage.

Some states also require that you carry underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage. This coverage will translate the same way as two types of bodily injury and one type of property damage. This protection is for you if the person who is at fault does not have enough coverage to pay for your injuries or auto damage. This does not mean that you cannot take this person to court, it only means that you can get your car repaired and have your injuries tended to without having to wait for a court decision.

Most no fault states also require that you carry personal injury protection (PIP) insurance to provide you with additional medical care should you be in an accident. PIP insurance will also cover the cost of lost wages so if you cannot work because of an accident you can keep paying your bills.

Farmers Insurance Group offers all of the necessary insurance for the state in which you live as well as additional insurance that you may want to consider purchasing for your vehicle. If you are financing your vehicle then your bank or loan company will likely require you to carry the following types of insurance regardless.

Comprehensive coverage, which protects you from natural disasters as well as man made disasters such as theft, vandalism, riots, etc. It also covers you if you accidentally hit an animal (such as a deer crossing the road) or if a bird flies into your windshield. Farmers offers automatic coverage for any devices that are installed in your vehicle, such as an in dash CD or DVD player.

Collision coverage provides you with protection if you should have a collision with an object, such as a tree, mailbox, fence, etc. or with another vehicle (such as a parked vehicle). Your loan institution may also require that you take on more medical payment coverage as well as uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
Even if you live in a no fault state, you may still want to consider purchasing uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Many people do not realize that if they are traveling out of state and have an accident in another state, they are subject to the laws of that state. In this case, if you are in an accident in a tort state, then the other person will be responsible for the cost of your damages. If they do not have auto insurance then you will want to have that additional protection.

Farmers Optional Insurance Coverage

Farmers Insurance Group offers an optional coverage plan that can provide you with some additional protection. They call this optional plan the Farmers Flex plan. This plan offers you accident forgiveness for three accidents in three years, rate shield, which locks in your rate for up to three years with no increases, declining deductibles which reduces the amount of your deductable without your rates increasing by $100 for every year that you don not have a claim (up to $500) and a new car pledge, which covers your vehicle for two years (or 24k miles, whichever comes first) at its ticket value if you have an accident (no depreciation).

Other optional coverage includes roadside assistance, which provides you with 24/7 towing, locksmith, battery jump and repair service, which is billed directly to Farmers Insurance Group, windshield glass repair service, car rental reimbursement (for auto accidents only), and extended customized equipment coverage, which covers your non-installed electronics in your vehicle, such as your GPS device, DVDs, CDs etc. (as long as they are listed with your insurance company as devices and objects in your vehicle).

Farmers Auto Insurance Discounts

There are also many discounts that Farmers Insurance Group offers their customers. However, this list will vary from state to state so if you choose to use Farmers as your insurance company, you will want to ensure that you check which discounts you are available to receive.
